Professor Chararlambos Roussos is recognized for his outstanding contribution to the strengthening of respiratory medicine and critical care worldwide.
Prof Charalambos Roussos completed his MD Degree at Athens University and his Ph.D at McGill University. He trained in Pulmonary and Intensive Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Boston University, McGill University, Montreal and Hopital Universitaire Laennec in Paris. He has served as Head of Intensive Care at Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill and then as Professor and Head of Pulmonology and Intensive Care at Evangelismos , Athens Chest Sotiria Hospitals, Athens University and Evgenidio University Hospital.
He has served as a member in the executive committee of the European Intensive Care and President of the European Respiratory Society. During his mandate he was pivotal in the EU decision to ban smoking advertising. Moreover, he was the founder of the European Lung Foundation and its first Chair.
He is considered the father of Academic Intensive Care in Greece and he achieved linking the specialization to Pulmonary Medicine. During his career, he has not only trained more than a hundred young physicians and helped their research projects but has been extremely successful at raising millions of euros in funds for research and for the renovation of ICU and other Hospital Units to State-of-the-Art standards. He achieved this as the founder of Thorax foundation, which supported education, research and patient care infrastructures in Greece.
Moreover, he not only funded the projects, he also was the principal medical/health care advisor in the planning (design and equipment) of the McGill Hospital reconstruction, the regional hospital in Santorini, the departments of pulmonology , the ICU and CCU facilities and the operating theaters at Evangelismos and at Athens Chest Hospitals, working with the team of architects and the team of end users.
His personal research focused in the understanding of respiratory failure and the function of the thoracic wall and many of his over 500 highly cited publications are considered seminal. His contribution nevertheless is far broader and includes teaching, promoting high standards of research and helping advocacy.
He is Member of the Academy of Athens and its Biomedical Research Foundation, Council member of the Federation of European Academies of Medicine, Professor Emeritus of Athens and McGill Universities. Furthermore, he has received the titles of Scholar and Scientist and the Jonathan Ballon award in Canada, Professeur Associe at Marseille University, Member of Fleischner Society.
Professor Roussos was the Editor of the the 3 volume classical textbook The Thorax, co-editor of the Ventilatory Failure textbook and the author of various chapters and articles in leading textbooks and journals, such as Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, Murray & Nadel’s Textbook of Respiratory Medicine, Fishman Pulmonary Diseases and Disorders, Principles of Critical Care Medicine, the Handbook of Physiology, New England Journal of Medicine, European respiratory journal, Journal of American Medical Association(JAMA), Chest, Journal of Clinical Investigation(JCI),American Review of Rep. Dis. and several others.
