Nostos University Presents Ernő Rubik

Meet Ernő Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, the most successful toy and puzzle of all time! In this Nostos University retrospective, we return to last summer’s Rubik Rally in the Lighthouse of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Foundation. In a very rare public appearance, Mr. Rubik explains how and why he made his brain-busting puzzle.

Forty-five years ago, as a professor of architecture and design, Rubik realized that his students needed to accept and play with complexity. At first, the Rubik’s cube appeared to be unsolvable, yet it thrilled some of the world’s greatest minds. Soon, its popularity became a phenomenon; the cube was embraced as a classic, and even an icon of ingenuity.

This festive evening, filled with surprises, is hosted by magician and Nostos University founder Mark Mitton, joined by Dutch speedcubing legend Erik Akkersdijk. Together they interview Ernő Rubik, who also answers questions from the audience.

Throughout the event, there are dazzling demonstrations by the fastest speedcubers in the world: twins Philipp and Sebastian Weyer, Nora Christ, Ricky Meiler, Daniel Goodman, Lucas Garron, and others. Domino artist Lily Hevesh and cardstacker Bryan Berg show off their artistic constructions to Ernő Rubik as a grand finale to this thought-provoking and delightful event.
