Minister of Education and Religious Affairs of Greece

Sofia Zacharaki was appointed Minister of Education and Religious Affairs on March 14, 2025. She has also served as Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Affairs. She assumed her duties at this newly established Ministry on June 27, 2023, following the national elections held on June 26, 2023, during which she was elected to the Greek Parliament for the first time, representing East Attica, with the New Democracy party.
From January 2021 to May 2023, she served as Deputy Minister of Tourism in charge of Tourism Education and Special Forms of Tourism. Previously, from July 2019 to January 2021, she had served as Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, responsible for primary and secondary education.
From March to June 2019, she served as Spokesperson of New Democracy.
She is a graduate of the Department of English Language and Philology at the School of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and completed her postgraduate studies in Comparative Pedagogy and Administration of European Educational Organizations at the National and Kapodistrian University.
She specialized in English teaching at the University of London’s Institute of Education.
In 2015, she represented Greece in the IVLP (International Visitor Leadership Program), as a Fellow of the United States Department of State, on “the role of Public-Private Partnerships in the reconstruction of Finance.” 
In the past, she has worked as an educator in public and private schools. She has also worked for the Ministry of Education in the European Union Department and the Secretariat for Lifelong Learning and Youth. She has served as Advisor to the Minister of Development on matters of international and European relations.
She speaks English, Spanish, and French.
