President of the American Himalayan Foundation

Norbu Tenzing is President of the San Francisco-based American Himalayan Foundation, which supports vital education, health care and cultural and environmental preservation across the Himalaya—touching the lives of more than 300,000 Sherpas, Nepalis, and Tibetans each year. With deep roots in the region, he brings a unique understanding of the challenges faced by Himalayan communities. A long-time advocate of reducing the risk and inequities faced by Sherpas and mountaineering workers on the world’s highest peaks, he has contributed to numerous books and documentaries on the subject. In 2024 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of New Hampshire. Norbu is the eldest son of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, one of the first two men to climb Everest in 1953.
