Former Member of the United States House of Representatives, Senior Advisor to the Board of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF)

John Sarbanes leads a Maryland-based nonprofit and serves as a senior advisor to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). He left Congress in January 2025 after 18 years focused on health, environment, and energy issues. Sarbanes spearheaded Congressional efforts to advance an historic suite of reforms to protect the right to vote, clean up corruption, and restore trust in government. He authored hallmark legislation providing student debt relief to over a million individuals pursuing careers in the public and nonprofit sectors. He secured federal funding for outdoor environmental education and earned national recognition for his work to improve the delivery of school-based health care. Prior to entering Congress, Sarbanes spent nearly two decades as an attorney in the private sector, an education reformer in state government, and a board member and volunteer on behalf of numerous nonprofit organizations. He recently served as Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University. A proud Greek-American, Sarbanes has long been active inside and outside of Congress on efforts to strengthen ties between the U.S., Greece, and Cyprus.
