Vice President of Knowledge Transfer & Corporate Relations, Bioethics Professor, and Director AI Ethics & Policy Network at ETH Zurich

Professor of Bioethics at ETH Zurich since 2017, Effy Vayena directs the Health Ethics & Policy Lab. Her work focuses on the ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genomics, the application of AI in health care, and governance challenges related to emerging technologies. A prominent leader within ETH Zurich, she has served as the Executive Board’s Associate Vice President for Digital Transformation and Governance for the last two years and in 2026 will assume the position of Vice President for Knowledge Transfer and Corporate Relations. Professor Vayena has held national and international advisory roles, serving as the Co-Chair of the World Health Organization's expert advisory group on AI health ethics and governance and as the Chair of the Greek National Bioethics and Technoethics Commission. She was also a member of the Swiss COVID-19 Science Task Force, is an elected member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, and directs the AI Ethics and Policy Network of ETH Zurich. In her work she bridges bioethics, public health, and global health governance.
