Head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University, Past President of the South African Society of Psychiatrists

Dr. Lachman is a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town who serves on the boards of the Africa Global Mental Health Institute, the World Association of Infant Mental Health, and the South African Society of Psychiatrists where she is Past President.  

She champions clinical training and education in youth mental health focusing on culturally sensitive and contextually relevant training. She leads the Tertiary Child & Adolescent service hosting the first South to South Child Mental health training initiative on the African Continent between the CMI, Aga Khan University Nairobi and Stellenbosch University. She convenes the only MPhil in Infant Mental health program in Africa training diverse health care professionals in Afrocentric practice. 

She is a well-published clinician researcher in child mental health in limited resource settings. Her PhD focused on optimizing positive engagement between infants and their mothers with severe mental illnesses. She serves on international platforms including World Psychiatric Association’s committee for Education and Publications and the Africa Global Mental Health Institute and is  scientific lead for Early Life and Development for the Lancet Commission on Women’s Mental Health.
