In an era grappling with declining literacy rates, the widespread circulation of misinformation, and a culture of digital distraction, public libraries stand as a crucial bulwark for democracy, access to knowledge, and free expression. This keynote will explore how the New York Public Library (NYPL) is uniquely positioned to address these challenges and shape a more informed, connected, and equitable future. While covering NYPL’s broad citywide initiatives and services, it will highlight the role of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, currently celebrating its 100th anniversary, as a place for scholarship and community in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. President Marx and Director Bivins will offer an insightful perspective on how public libraries are not merely custodians of books, but dynamic, indispensable institutions actively fostering connection, disseminating truth, and strengthening the fabric of a democratic society.
