STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION

Programs for kids of all ages at the Summer Nostos Festival RetroFuture Edition

June 17 2020

Joyful acrobatics, unexpected illusions, daring acts, and activities to stretch body and mind will captivate kids and adults alike at the online SNFestival RetroFuture Edition

Do you remember the childhood feeling of experiencing something so totally new, so entirely enchanting, it left a lasting impression on your sense of what’s possible?

That sense of wonder is the foundation of the magical world designed for kids of all ages at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s (SNF) Summer Nostos Festival RetroFuture Edition. Magician Mark Mitton curates a program bursting with mystery and excitement.

Tune in to three different Kids’ Hour programs, featuring a lasso-throwing cowboy from the Bronx, animal trainers, DIY creations, acrobatics, magic tricks, juggling, and exercises to stretch both mind and body, in a show hosted by Greek stand-up comedian Lambros Fisfis.

The Circus of Illusions revisits an electrifying show under the stars with an illustrious group of circus artists led by Tony-award-winner David Shiner, director of Cirque du Soleil’s most successful touring show. Circus has been a centerpiece of the Summer Nostos Festival since the beginning, and Best of Circus calls up sensational highlights from over the years, from laugh-out-loud physical comedy to joyful and inventive acrobatics, to an edge-of-your-seat high-wire walk by David Dimitri.

The fascinating artists taking part in these shows also include Nina Burri, AJ Silver, Lea Toran Jenner, Anna Jack, the Red Trouser Show, Compagnie Soralino, Giorgos Karagiannis, Sofia Tepla, Elayne Kramer, David Shiner, Shaunna Kotka, and Barcode Circus Company.

The SNFestival RetroFuture Edition would not be complete without an audience favorite of both children and adults, the participatory musical show by Choir! Choir! Choir!. The Canadian musical duo will premiere a choral video created with your participation, as you sing “With a Little Help from My Friends” by the Beatles along with Kostis Maraveyas.

At Nostos University, fun and games are the basis of a brain-teasing curriculum. Don’t miss the Nostos University Retrospective for a chance to meet Ernő Rubik, inventor of the most successful toy and puzzle of all time, as well as dazzling demonstrations by the fastest speedcubers in the world, domino artist Lily Hevesh, and cardstacker Bryan Berg. Speedcubing legend Erik Akkersdijk cohosts with Mark Mitton.

Then, at the Nostos University 2021 Sneak Peek, Garry Kasparov—widely considered to be the greatest chess player of all time—and Judit Polgár—known as the greatest female chess player of all time—discuss how technology has transformed competition in chess and beyond. Mathematician and former professional football player John Urschel will host the conversation, which will also feature contributions from ChessBase co-founder Frederic Friedel and Greek grandmaster Hristos Banikas.
