Studying the link between violent crimes and serious mental health illnesses is essential to avoiding some of the most catastrophic crimes from occurring. Establishing more understanding of severe mental illnesses and the potential for crime creates space for addressing the challenges that arise when individuals with serious mental health illnesses are incarcerated, tackling current issues within America’s crowded prisons, and how courts can better approach the topic of mental health.
