Dance of the Cranes

When the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) hosted its first-ever choreographed art performance in June 2014, only a few traces of the building itself existed here and there—as a living promise for the future.

The stage at this first performance was the construction site, complemented by plantings of olive trees and lavender and the Attica sky in sunset colors. The performers were none other than the ten construction cranes at the site, dancing to Renato Zanella’s unique choreography and the music of Gustav Holst’s The Planets, performed live on-site by the Greek National Opera Orchestra with Myron Michailidis as conductor.

This magical performance, conceived by the architect of the SNFCC, Renzo Piano, could not possibly be left out of the program of the Summer Nostos Festival: RetroFuture Edition. This was the unforgettable first act of the SNFCC, and it’s worth revisiting six years later through an entirely new perspective: the perspective of people who have seen it completed, made it a part of their lives, and enjoyed magical moments like this there every day.
