SNF Dialogues - SNF Agora Conversations

The Interplay Between Technology and Democracy: Potential and Limitations

The SNF DIALOGUES and the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University will examine, through an online webcast discussion, what COVID-19 entails about the role of technology in society, democracy, and our collective future. On Wednesday, June 24 at 18:30 (GMT+3) at dialogues.snf.org, the SNF DIALOGUES and the SNF Agora Institute will discuss the potential benefits technology holds for democracy and any limits to its potential.

As the world increasingly turns to technology and AI to respond and recover from the pandemic, what lessons can we learn about how technology might help both governments and citizens redefine governance, participation, competition, freedom, and equality? Can technology assist us in making liberal democracies more just and inclusive, so that everyone has a seat at the table? And what are the inherent drawbacks and dangers in these technologies that we must recognize and address?

Participants in the discussion:
- Alondra Nelson, President of the Social Science Research Council, Harold F. Linder Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study
- George Zarkadakis, Digital Lead at Willis Towers Watson, Author

The discussion will be moderated by journalist and SNF DIALOGUES Executive Director Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou and SNF Agora Institute director Harhrie Han.
It will be conducted in English with simultaneous interpretation into Greek.

The DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.
