ARTWORKS presents

What do we really share when we coexist in the same space? How is our identity extended through our relationships with others?

The first cohort of SNF ARTWORKS Fellows, including 45 visual artists and 15 filmmakers, will present their work at the Summer Nostos Festival organized by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). The festival takes place from June 23 to 30 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens with free admission, and here the widely varied collection of artworks will let visitors get to know the contemporary art scene in Greece.

The title functions affirmatively and constitutes a necessary assertion against the conditions of precariousness. Coexistence, exchange of ideas and creative tensions become a means of resistance to uncertainty. The participating artists propose narratives that dispute the conditions of the present as they open up the debate to the future.

Painting, sculpture, video, photography, performance, installation, new media, and sound works activate spaces in the building of the National Library of Greece and the Southern Walks of the Stavros Niarchos Park. Through their work, the artists explore the potential of personal narratives, reflect on the role of digital and physical archives and the expectations and the challenges of technological evolution, while questioning humans' relationship with other forms of existence and the individual's relations to the community. They employ elements from everyday life in order to approach the 'uncanny' and return to past mythologies in order to create different ones for the future. They rethink the concepts of ownership, automation, work, production and identity, discerning their exclusions and delineations, thereby imagining tools to both disrupt and break free.

ARTWORKS was created in June 2017 with exclusive support from its founding donor, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), in order to cultivate a fertile and nurturing environment for the artistic community in Greece. At the core of its activities lays the SNF Artist Fellowship Program, through which ARTWORKS grants monetary awards to young artists, allowing them time and freedom to develop their artistic practice. The first SNF Artist Fellowship concluded in October 2018. The first 60 Fellows will soon be joined by the recently announced group of 80 artists who will begin their Fellowship in September 2019.
