Mieskuoro Huutajat (Screaming Men’s Choir)

Founded in 1987 in Oulu, Finland by Petri Sirviö, composer and conductor of the group, Mieskuoro Huutajat is a Finnish choir that doesn't sing a note. Defying common expectations, it is, in essence, a choral noise ensemble. Drawing on Nordic existentialism in idiosyncratic ways, this performance group has created an art form of universal resonance. In their signature style, the choir members, decently dressed in black suits, enter their venues in a paramilitary-like manner and begin to scream, bellow and shout excerpts from texts that can range from national anthems and folk songs to children's ditties, poetry and international treaties. Sometimes the text is delivered as a complex rhythmic structure, sometimes as a simple-but-loud reading. Disciplined expression is blended with primitive force, and precise articulation with non-linguistic howl.

Their performances may take place at cultural institutions as well as by ocean shores, on mountaintops or in public spaces such as railway stations, Olympic stadiums or just on the street.

In their two performances at the SNFCC, quotes from Greek and other European texts, dismantled and recast in new form, will be put into “shouting” in ways that reflect the artists’ warped sense of humor and their thought-provoking meditation on issues of democracy and participation.
